Summary:
Responsible for ensuring that all surgical instrumentation is properly decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed, and tracked in an accurate and timely manner throughout the hospital.
Works independently with little supervision.
Serves as a resource to Sterile Processing customers.
Principal Duties and
Responsibilities:
The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job.
He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.
1.
Operates and maintains all mechanical machinery, cart washers, instrument washers, steam sterilizers, sterrads/V-PRO, ultrasonic, and drying cabinets within SPD and reporting of malfunctioning equipment or discrepancies to supervisor.
2.
Print surgery schedules from Crystal Enterprise.
3.
Replenishes supplies to sterile storage and examines for holes, tears, or other threats to sterility, and rotates sterile supplies for maximum utilization.
4.
Preparation, sterilization, and maintenance of surgical instruments, trays, basins, glassware, tubing, and other supplies for designated departments.
5.
Delivers all orders as soon as requested and collects soiled instrumentation daily from designated departments.
6.
Decontamination of instrumentation, equipment, and patient reusables in accordance with manufacturers guidelines and assuring cleanliness of each item.
7.
Attends and contributes to all departmental meetings and inservices either directly or by reading minutes.
8.
Assembles case carts in an orderly and timely manner maintaining sterility and indicating missing items.
Pulls items in accordance with HSM pick ticket insuring all CS items are accounted for.
9.
Answers bell, phone, etc, and relays all messages to the appropriate person or persons, in a timely and courteous manner.
10.
Assists in maintaining all areas within SPD in a safe, clean, and orderly manner and insure that all supplies and instrumentation are put in their proper location.
11.
Interacts with customers using courtesy, clarity, and respect.
12.
Perform other duties as directed or required.
13.
Utilizes Abacus instrument tracking system consistently and appropriately as it pertains to all central service functions.
14.
Expected to perform cleaning, stocking, and organizational functions within the department daily to promote maximum efficiency.
15.
Performs daily bowie dick and biological testing on all sterilizers.
Records information in all sterilization logs (steam and sterrad/V-PRO) assuring that each record is filled out completely and accurately.
16.
Thorough inspection of all instrumentation for cleanliness, functionality, proper order, set complete (or missing items noted), indicators, locks, and filters in place as necessary.
17.
Communicates information promptly and accurately with customers.
Initiates corrective action, service recovery, and follow up when customers are dissatisfied or expectations are not met.
18.
Responds to cart wash alarm and empties carts in a timely manner.
Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:
1.
High school diploma or equivalent with past central sterile experience preferred.
2.
IAHCSMM certification preferred; will be required within 18 months of hire date.
