Health Technician (Screener)

The Health Technician (HT) functions as a highly skilled member of the staff. The HT provides administrative and clinical support for the delivery of acute and non acute direct patient care on multiple inpatient medical wards. The HT offers support to families/visitors/employees as needed. He/She obtains and documents patients' vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, actual weight, oxygen saturation and postural vital signs). The HT can set-up and use electronic thermometers, vital sign measurement equipment and manual measurements when needed, pulse oximetry and suctioning equipment. Recognizes and reports abnormal values to the Physician and/or the RN. He/She initiates cardiac monitoring correctly; prepares patient for and obtains a 12 lead EKGs using the EKG machine. Performs venipuncture to obtain serum blood samples as ordered according to VHA, Medical Center, and Laboratory policy and procedures. Takes appropriate action for critical values to include, but not limited to reporting the results to the physician and/or the RN. Moves, lifts, transfers and transports patients as necessary using proper equipment and correct transfer techniques. Assists patients to ambulate and transfer safely. Assists providers with specialized exams/procedures in ambulatory care by preparing patient, handing instruments to the provider providing emotional support to the patients; cleans equipment and room between procedures using proper infection control and prevention techniques. Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to AH.A standards. Assists with answering call lights, telephones, comfort measures, and the provision of fluids/food to patients as needed. The HT provides support and reassurance to the patient he or she gains the confidence and cooperation of patients to achieve appropriate patient care outcomes. Gathers pertinent data and information regarding presenting complaint from patients/family members and reports to the RN. The Health Technician will assist with answering phones and placing calls/pages as needed. Greets and assists arriving patients/families/visitors/ambulances and directs them to the appropriate treatment area. Participates in keeping the patient tracking board updated; assist with maintaining charts/records and copying records as needed. He/She is responsible for safeguarding patient records during visit in accordance with the Privacy Act and medical center policies. Facilitates maintaining charts and patient tracking information board and orders, maintains, and stocks supplies for the assigned ward. Work Schedule:

Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
receiving written and verbal requests for a variety of difficult exams, entering consults, scheduling exams, entering clinical reminders, entering requests for labs and x-rays; updating patient demographic information; operating equipment such as EKG machines, cardiac monitoring and vital sign monitors; performing a variety of routine and difficult diagnostic tests and procedures including blood pressure, oxygen saturation, visual acuity and postural vital signs. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements:
The work requires the HT to be mobile throughout the medical center as needed, involving standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting (moderately heavy). The HT should be capable of prolonged standing/walking and be physically capable of pushing equipment, wheelchairs and patient stretchers. Proper lifting and body mechanics must be utilized at all times to prevent injury. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
