Participates in professional activities of Mental Health & Behavioral Science Service/Medical Center, at the direction/approval of Senior Supervisory Psychologist and, ultimately, the Chief of Mental Health; Primary activities include provisions of group and individual psychotherapy and assessment. Additional aActivities may include, but are not necessarily limited to:
administrative committees of Mental Health and/or the Medical Center, continuing education, training, research, and treatment/program evaluation; Functions as a member of the Louisville VAMC Medical Staff with full clinical privileges; Complies with all documentation and coding procedures, and national/local performance measures, including timely health care screening/completion of clinical reminders for all patients; Has strong foundation in evidence based psychotherapy/assessment, possess good time management skills, be self-directed, and has good communication/ negotiation skills to balance workload demands; familiar with/able to use a personal computer; Proficient in using word processing program/Microsoft Windows; Proficient in writing psychological reports, chart notes, treatment summaries, completes work tasks in a timely manner; prioritizes work appropriately/seeks consultation to deal with difficult cases; demonstrates leadership abilities in a respectful interdisciplinary team format, self-motivating to seek out/complete work assignments; Familiar with VA/Psychology Service policies and procedures, follows protocol while maintaining necessary flexibility to overcome any barriers to providing services to veterans; Exhibit excellent customer service skills, toward patients and coworkers, remains positive during high levels of stress; Able to work collegially with all professions, demonstrates tolerance of those with different opinions and/or attitudes. Provides psychological treatment and services:
Applies a wide range of professional psychological theories, evidence-based therapies and assessment methods to a variety of patient populations, Provides a full range of evidence based therapeutic interventions in group and individual formats, Develops comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment strategies. Has knowledge of the recovery model, and integrates it in the treatment of Veterans experiencing mental illness. Develops and documents clear treatment goals that are thorough, based in recovery and utilize symptom severity and intensity to inform treatment frequency. Develops and implements clinical procedures that balance clinical demand and therapeutic resources, resulting in successful meeting of performance measures and strives to continually improve clinical systems. Responsible for timely completion of all clinical record keeping and documentation required by the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service and Medical Center. Provides psychological evaluation and assessment:
Performs evaluations of Veterans with a variety of psychological, mood and personality disorders. Evaluations can be performed for clinical or administrative purposes including Compensation and Pension Examinations, as directed by the Supervisory Psychologist. Performs consultation and training:
Consults with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Serves as a consultant to other medical center staff as requested and assists in their formulation of the psychological characteristics and appropriate treatment expectations regarding their patients. May provide clinical supervision to various disciplines and levels of training, including trainees seeking licensure in psychology. May be involved in the training of medical students, medical and psychiatric residents, nursing students, fellows and other graduate or post-graduate trainees, as appropriate. Participates in meetings, committees or projects as assigned:
Attends of and participates in organizational meetings, treatment planning meetings and assigned committees or projects. May serve on the Medical Center, VISN, and/or National VA committees or task forces. May represent the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service on decision-making committees at the Robley Rex Medical Center. May participate in leadership roles on local, state, and national professional organizations. May rand represents the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service and/or Medical Center at professional/program community group/events and committees. May participate in, and presents, outcome data and research at VA and regional or national scientific or professional meetings, as appropriate. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed. The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed; OR, have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and, in addition, successfully complete a re-specialization program (including documentation of an approved internship completed as part of the re-specialization program) meeting both of the following conditions:
(a) The re-specialization program must be completed in an APA or a CPA accredited doctoral program; and, (b) the specialty in which the applicant is retrained must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. Internship Requirement:
Applicants must have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that was accredited by APA or CPA at the time the program was completed and that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed; OR, new psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Office of Academics Affiliations at the time the individual was an intern; OR, VHA facilities that offered full-time, one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement; OR, applicants who completed an internship that was not accredited by APA or CAP at the time the program was completed may be considered eligible for hire only if they are currently board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty area that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. (NOTE:
Once board certified, the employee is required to maintain board certification.) Licensure:
Applicants must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Exception:
Non-licensed applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate psychologist at the GS-11 or GS-12 grade under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 (c)(2)(B) for a period not to exceed two years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a psychologist who is licensed. Failure to obtain licensure during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. English Language Proficiency:
Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Physical Requirements:

Board Certification and Loss of Credential:
Persons hired to psychology positions in the VHA who completed an internship that was not accredited at the time the program was completed must be board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty area that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. The board certificate must be current and the applicant must abide by the certifying body's requirement for continuing education. Loss of Credential:
Once board certified, psychologist must maintain a full, valid and unrestricted board certification to remain qualified for employment. A psychologist who fails to maintain the required board certification must be removed from the occupation, which may result in termination of employment. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Experience:
Clinical Neuropsychology. The American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABCN) is a specialty board of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). The ABCN is responsible for administration of the examination for competence in the specialty of Clinical Neuropsychology. ABPP is the senior parent board for the profession of psychology and was established in 1947, with ABCN being incorporated in 1981. Grade Determinations:
Staff Psychologist, GS-13 Experience. At least two years of experience as a professional psychologist, with at least one year equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Assignment. This is the full performance level for staff psychologists. At this level, psychologists are licensed to practice independently in the provision of psychological services, consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate. They may be assigned to any VHA program and setting, such as inpatient or outpatient medicine, primary care, surgery, mental health, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, Compensation and Pension, Vet Centers, and the VHA National Center for Organization Development. Psychologists diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. Among the modalities provided are individual, family, and group psychotherapies and other interventions such as behavioral health and community interventions. Psychologists consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Staff psychologists may be involved in program evaluation, teaching, training, and research activities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all the following KSAs. Knowledge of, and ability to apply, professional psychological treatments to the full range of patient populations. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
